Hopeful Breakthrough on Potty Training!

Let me start by saying this is not what you think it will be about.  And I know it's not proper to talk about poo, but I just want to tell my story in case someone else is going through the same thing as me and has no idea what it is.  As you know I have been having major issues potty training Jackson.  He is STILL having accidents and I know we are driving each other crazy.  A special thank you to my Mother-in-law Janet for sending me this book when she knew I was in desperation mode! LOL The book is called  "It's No Accident-Breakthrough solutions to your child's wetting, constipation, UTI's, and other potty problems" by Steve J. Hodges, MD, Pediatric Urologist.

When I first started reading it, it was basically telling me that Jackson was constipated & I thought this Doc was crazy!  Jackson goes #2 everyday.  BUT-as I kept reading, I realized it was MY SON he was talking about!!!  Apparently 90% of people that come to him for potty training issues are just like me and don't believe there child is constipated, then he ex-rays the child and shows the parents the huge mass of poop built up in there little girl/boy.  Even though Jackson goes everyday I have ALWAYS known he never went the whole amount-he would just go enough to satisfy me that he went.  I ask him almost daily, "are you sure you don't need to go anymore?".  Well, the answer was YES he did need to go-poor little guy, but he just couldn't!  The book explained that because of the build up, it was much like being pregnant and sitting on his little bladder and causing him to have a lot of accidents.  So after reading this book (and talking to a friend who had the exact same results as the book talked about) I made a Dr.'s appointment today.

Let me just say I went prepared to go to war.  I brought my book along with me thinking the Dr. might think I was crazy and that I may have to demand to see a urologist to be absolutely sure this was not my child's problem.  It didn't go that way at all.  The Dr. was impressed with me (thanks to Janet) for knowing he could be severely constipated even though he went everyday. I never had to open my book once.  He said the EXACT same things as the Dr. from the book!!  Sure enough he felt a the mass and even heard his bowls making terrible sounds :(  Jackson is constipated and I have been punishing him-enter Mom guilt!!!  Our Dr. said just like the book-that he has to convince  90% of parents that have the same issue as us-that their child is constipated and he ends up having to show them on an x-ray and then they believe him. Luckily I believed him and the treatment isn't too bad.

So we basically have to "blow it out"!  And give him 7 doses of Mira-lax in 24 hours and break-up him mass and completely empty him out.  PRAY FOR US! lolololol  Then he will be on a daily dose for at least 3 months up to a year or more so it doesn't happen again.  I will keep you posted (well, not with the gory details) with how he is doing.  Doc said this should completely stop his wetting accidents.  Fingers crossed!!!

Wow! I am so glad you shared this! I'll tuck it away in my "mama bank" in case we have any issues. Good luck for the next few days. Jackson is lucky to have you!

hey! sadie was on miralax from about age 1 to age 3. Van has been on it since about 7 months. The miralax should help him and i know you will see improvements:) I had to see a pediatric GI specialist for both of their constipation issues. Hope his little tummy gets to feeling better!
